Some of the entries in the Palatinate’s Guinness Book of Wine Records include the oldest wine in the world (a bottle that dates back to the 3rd century, which was buried alongside a Roman legionary as provision for his journey and can today be seen in the Historisches Museum der Pfalz [Palatinate Historical Museum] in Speyer), the oldest productive vineyard (dating back to around 1650 in Rhodt), the oldest wine route, the first wine trail, the highest must weight ever measured (326 Oechsle ensured that the must never turned into wine) and the largest wine-growing community (Neustadt an der Weinstraße and Landau have been fighting it out head to head for years). Thankfully, success of this magnitude has not led to a sacrifice of quality. The Palatinate is currently regarded as one of the most innovative wine-growing areas in Germany, and has won first place in both national and international competitions.
