Highlights of wine culture

In addition to the town of Deidesheim, the roman villa Weilberg in Bad Dürkheim, the oldest vineyard in Rhodt as well as the historic museum in Speyer with the world’s oldest bottle of wine have been designated as »Höhepunkte der Weinkultur« (Highlights of wine culture). The highlights of wine culture are special places that document the history and tradition of wine-growing, the achievements of the wine-producers and the cultural heritage of wine. An independent jury selected 40 highlights of wine culture from more than 100 suggestions submitted from all wine-growing regions.  »This campaign is intended to raise awareness of our wine culture and to encourage people to travel to the regions and to experience for themselves what wine-growing means in Germany« was how Mr. Schulz, the head of communication at the DWI (German Wine Institute) explained the project. »Many people – particularly those outside wine-growing regions – are unaware that Germany is a wine-producing country with a tradition of wine-making that is more than two-thousand years old and that has profoundly shaped both the people as well as the countryside and towns. Our highlights are living contemporary witnesses of this wine culture and offer tourists exciting points of reference on the subject«, the DWI representative continued.
